Vanessa Berry’s essays from Gentle and Fierce were turned into a series to create multiple book covers. Her connection to animals, particularly insects, was intriguing to me and something I wanted to explore. The covers display a caterpillar about to feast on top of a cotton spool, a spider enjoying a hot drink in a matchbox bed and a junk bug preparing a bath in a measuring spoon.
By pairing illustrated insects with everyday objects, I was able to create monotonous scenes that reflect the quirkiness of Berry and her desire to be an animal, something many of us can relate to.
